How to install multiple processors?

As you know by now, Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition supports upto four procesors and the Enterprise Edition supports upto eight. The 64 bit DataCenter edition, supports upto 64 processors with a minimum of eight processors required!

That is why it is important that you know how to upgrade a (single processor) Uniprocessor (UP) system to a Symmetric Multiprocessor (SMP) system. Because Windows Server 2003 supports multiprocessor capability all that you need to do is to upgrade the driver of the computer to handle multiple processors. Otherwise, it would be of no use if you install multiple processors. Performance will not improve until the driver has been updated.

In order to update the driver, open Device Manager and expand the computer type to view the installed device. Right-click on the device and select Update Driver – refer to the image given below – the Update Driver wizard will start up – just follow the prompts and install the SMP driver.

To verify if all the processors in your computer are working, open Task Manager and click on the Performance tab.

You should be able to see all the processors installed in your computer.
